When Star Trek: Voyager came along, it held a lot of promise. This was the ship that was on its own in an uncharted part of the galaxy, trying to get home. The journey would take decades, and the Federation and Maquis crews would have to learn to live together.

There is no denying that Star Wars is a sci-fi icon. The series changed the way that we looked at scifi, both on-screen and behind-the-scenes. Yet for all its accomplishments, Star Wars takes a lot of heat. Primarily, the critics love to bash the Ewoks and Jar-Jar Binks.

Prior to 2005 Doctor Who, to me, was just a name. This was at least partly because I was only six years old when the long original run of the series ended in 1989. And so in 2005 I went from being a newcomer to being a fan. Not just because it’s good sci-fi, but because it’s sci-fi that isn’t afraid to make you think.
